Accelerated Reader Volunteers needed

We still have some weekly, biweekly, and monthly volunteer slots available for Greenwood’s Accelerated Reader program this year. AR is a very fun reading program for 3rd and 4th graders that encourages the children to read by offering point values for books. Each book has an associated quiz to be taken after the book is read, and the children get points for each quiz they successfully complete. In conjunction with their teachers, the children set personal quarterly point-goals and then read to meet those goals.

Parent volunteers are needed to fill one-hour volunteer slots during which they help students pick out books, add quiz information to student logs, and monitor computers while quizzes are being taken. This program offers a great opportunity to really work with and interact with the students, and get to know your children’s classmates. The children are truly excited about taking part in the AR process. If you would like more information about volunteering for the AR program, please contact Lauri Black at lauriblack@comcast.net or 301-260-0360.
Thanks so much!

Greenwood Gator Guides

Essentially, the goals of the Greenwood Gator Guide Program are to ease the transition for new famliies; strengthen our community; build positive relationships; create more family involvement. If you are a family who has been a part of the community, you are perfect for this program, and we need you to make it a success!

How do I join? You can apply to participate either as a Gator Guide or a New Gator by completing the short application http://tinyurl.com/3c49j4f . Because this is a new program, to be piloted in the 2011/2012 school year, there are a limited number of Gator Guide positions available.

We are open to suggestions and look forward to growing a fantastic program with the help of our amazing community.

If you have questions, please contact Amy Mascott: amymascott@verizon.net

Room Parents are needed!

There are two ways that parents can help support the classroom in the Room Parent Role. These folks help plan and run the Halloween and Valentine’s parties for his/her child’s classroom and coordinate little items such as the end of the year gift and spring fair basket.

See choices below and email Catherine Akers at akersonline@verizon.net

  1. Are you interested in being the head room parent for your child’s classroom? If so, you will work as the liaison between the teacher and the other parents who are interested in helping out!
  2. Do you want to assist a group of parents who want to help out? If so, work with the head room parent as needed, to coordinate parties, year-end gifts and other special projects.

For any questions or to indicate your interest, please use the contact email above.. The PTA can provide a handbook to all interested parents to help navigate this role!
